Weather Wise: How do storms get their names?

Did you know to some today’s snowstorm is named Indra?  Do you remember Avery, Eboni, Fisher or Gia?  Me neither.

But you do probably remember the names Katrina, Camille, Hugo and Sandy.

If you knew today’s storm was Indra, or the storm in the northeast over the weekend was named Harper, you probably watch the Weather Channel.

That station began naming winter storms in November of 2012.

Perhaps you remember winter storm Bozeman in November of 2014, named in honor of Bozeman High School’s Latin classes, which compiled an alphabetical list of storm names based on Latin and Greek words for the Weather Channel.

In this week’s Weather Wise, the naming of winter storms is very different than the naming of tropical systems.
