HELENA — The Montana Campus Compact awarded 12 Montana college students the Montana Student Volunteer award for demonstrating exceptional service in their communities. One Carroll College recipient is the founder of a local non-profit organization.

Hailey James is a junior, biology major on the pre-med track at Carroll College. She is one of the 12 recipients of the Montana Student Volunteer Award for her volunteer efforts in the Helena community.

"I love being able to serve my community. So, any opportunity to do so, I'm just so happy to step into that," says Hailey James, Carroll Cares Founder.

One of James’ efforts is starting a non-profit, Carroll Cares.

"Carroll Cares is a program that helps the elderly and the immunosuppressed communities in Helena,” says James. “Just getting groceries or other items you might need, especially if they don't feel comfortable going out in public and getting those items themselves."

MTN News introduced the organization when they began back in March at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, James says they are averaging three trips a week to those needing items, but cannot go outside due to the pandemic. Carroll Cares also partnered with a local grocery store to help with free deliveries to their customers.

“I know everyone is struggling through this but anything we can do to make it, maybe just one a little bit better is so good. I just feel blessed to be able to be a part of that," says James.

Carroll Cares has over 30 student volunteers equipped with masks and other precautions to help the Helena Community.
