HELENA — ExplorationWorks has launched a new video series to help families stay excited about science while they’re stuck at home.
“Science @ Home with Sara” is a Youtube series that currently features experiments families can do at home, with items already in their home.
The series is hosted by ExplorationWorks Education Director Sara Feilzer.
“Once we found out the schools were closed, which also meant we were closed, we immediately started looking at ‘How do we help Helena?’’ said Feilzer. “We realized we’re kind of a special place, and because of our resources we can help kids do experiments at home.”
Feilzer said this is something the museum has always wanted to do, now just happens to be a perfect time to implement it.
While watching the video, or doing the experiment at home, parents are encouraged to ask their young scientist questions like: “What are we trying to find out?” and “What do you think will happen?”
Trying to figure out the world around us is the foundation of scientific learning.
Feilzer’s hope is the series helps make science more accessible for everyone.
“A lot of time people just need that structure,” explained Feilzer. “We need the structure of, ‘I do this, then we ask these questions to kind of figure out what’s going on.’ So that’s what we’re trying to do, to provide that structure to people who maybe don’t know how to do science at home but want to.”
People can catch new episodes ofScience @ Home with Sara each day while the schools are closed for COVID-19 precautions. Once schools open up, the series will move to a weekly schedule.
In the coming weeks Sara will be expanding the experiments to a few that people shouldn’t try at home, but they look really cool.
ExplorationWorks, like many nonprofits, is taking a significant financial hit right now due to the COVID-19 closure. People are encouraged to donate to the causes they support, and help make sure those services remain in the community.
