HELENA — The Rocky Mountain Development Council announced they are near completion in their new affordable housing project in Helena.

Soon, grass and a playground will bring together the 85 units of the Red Alder Residences, the newest affordable housing project by Rocky Mountain Development Council (RMDC). Rocky Mountain says they are making good progress with the project.

“We're really excited, because the first 37 apartments of our Red Alder Residences are ready to roll and we've begun to lease up on them,” says Liz Mogstad, Affordable Housing Director for RMDC. “So, we are just about halfway there to have the entire project complete and still on pace to have the whole thing done in January [2021]."

Rocky Mountain is already at work filling the units. They’ve already received 200 applications, 50 within just the first day. As of October 22nd, five tenants have already moved in with more expected within the next few weeks. This project has shown Rocky Mountain the need of affordable housing in Helena.

“We're moving them in as fast as we can process paperwork and get them ready to roll,” says Mogstad. “So, we've had far more applications than we ever imagined we would and they're still coming in the door. So, we obviously have a need here in Helena, with these types of apartments."

Janet Mullins applied for a unit on the first day, July 15th, 2020, with the help of family members. The project is not complete yet, but she loves the area already.

“I love it! It's a beautiful area. I can watch the trains go by, I watch the sun come up and down. It's amazing," says Mullins, one of the first to move in to the Red Alder Residences.

Rocky Mountain hopes to have at least 37 units filled by the end of this year.

Although they’ve received many already, Rocky Mountain is still accepting applications for the Red Alder Residences. For more information, click here.
