BUTTE — A federal judge has approved Superfund cleanup plan for Butte.
The approval of the consent decree secures more than $150million worth of cleanup work from the Atlantic Richfield Company.
Under the agreement, contaminated tailings at the northside and diggings east area, as well as along Silver Bow and Blacktail Creeks will be removed, more treatment of stormwater and groundwater, and sets aside 120 acres for parks and greenways in the Mining City.
The approval means the order is enforceable by the court, and aims to start the process removing the area's Superfund status by 2024.
