HELENA — Construction is expected to soon begin on a sidewalk project that will connect Eastgate Elementary School to East Valley Middle School, significantly improving pedestrian travel for students.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) project will install a ADA compliant sidewalk that will run the north side of East Lewis Street from the intersection of Lake Helena Drive near Eastgate School to the intersection Oak Avenue near East Valley Middle School.

East Helena Superintendent Ron Whitmoyer says this will be a significant safety improvement for students traveling between the schools.

“The other option is to walk down the middle of Lewis Street from East Valley Middle School all the way to Eastgate School and that’s just not great for kids, they need a sidewalk,” said

MDT will also be making sidewalk improvements on East King Street and Montana Avenue near Radley and Prickly Pear elementary schools.

Weather permitting, construction is anticipated between June 1, 2020 and mid-August 2020. Construction may cause temporary single lane closures.

The project is being funded with Federal Highway Administration Transportation Alternative funds and East Helena School District. The project is being constructed by Helena Sand & Gravel, Inc.
