HELENA — Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton has named a new second-in-command for his office.
Dutton announced Capt. Brent Colbert as the new undersheriff. Colbert started in the position Wednesday, replacing Jason Grimmis, who retired last month.
Colbert started with the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Office 25 years ago, as a detention officer. He became a deputy in 2003, working on patrol and serving in the Wolf Creek and Lincoln substations. He eventually rose to patrol division captain.
For the last two years, Colbert served as LCSO’s special operations captain. He oversaw many of the department’s specialized programs, including the SWAT team, the Civil Disobedience Team, the Water Emergency Team and – after 2019 – the Coroner’s Division.
Colbert said he’s honored to take on the undersheriff job.
“I knew I could do a good job and work in partnership with the sheriff,” he said. “Also, the old undersheriff, Jason Grimmis, and I were friends; we started almost about the same time in the jail. I know there will be big shoes to fill, but I will do my best.”
Dutton told MTN he had multiple well-qualified candidates to choose from within the department. He said Colbert’s experience in all areas of the sheriff’s office make him a good fit for the undersheriff job.
“His ability for concise communication and loyalty to our citizens is excellent,” Dutton said. “His strong points are my weakness and my strong points are his weakness. I am honored to have had such a qualified team that understands our mission, vision and values. I’m proud to say that Undersheriff Colbert has earned all of his promotions, and his sense of service to our citizens is commendable. We will make a great team.”
Colbert thanked his family and everyone else who gave him support.
