Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is now taking applications for their three-month long summer internship program.
For 29 years, FWP has offered a college internship program to give students an opportunity to put the education they receive within the classroom into practice in the real world.
Interns with FWP work at various parks throughout the state, including Giant Springs State Park in Great Falls.
Giant Springs park manager Alex Sholes said, “Giant Springs State Park is Montans’s most visited state park. We receive 500,000 visitors per year and our summer season is the busy time.”
Sholes said that having interns during the busiest season of the year is a win-win for both the students and the staff.
“It provides them a chance to get some real world experience in a position that they could be applying for when they graduate from school...and it benefits the park because you know it allows us to hire another employee when a lot of time we can't because of internal funding,” Sholes said.
Intern duties will include the following:
- taking inventory of all signs in the park
- help with day-to-day operations
- manning the ranger station
- going on patrols
- helping with special events in the park
- answering questions from visitors
- helping with interpretive and education programs
While students with career emphases in related fields, such as natural resources or parks and recreation are recommended, applicants of all majors and backgrounds are invited to apply. Interested applicants simply must possess a valid driver's license or be enrolled at an accredited college or university to apply.
