More than 100 children in Great Falls will be a little safer when riding bikes thanks to a big donation.
Students at Longfellow Elementary School received free bike helmets on Thursday.
The Brain Injury Alliance of Montana and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association have teamed up to donate helmets to kids across the state.
Ben Snipes, a Great Falls lawyer and member of the association, was asked by the organization if he had any ideas about what to do with 102 helmets and he thought of Longfellow.
"One of my good friends, Crissy Stover, she's a first grade teacher here. She's been a longtime teacher in this district and really speaks highly of the students she works with and, really, of the new school,” Snipes said.
The Alliance’s executive director, John Bigart III, said the helmets are very important.
"Most people don't realize it, but here in Montana we toggle between second and third in the nation per capita for traumatic brain injury-related deaths. In Montana, we work hard, we play hard, and it shows,” Bigart explained.
Helmets should always fit properly, be well taken care of, worn consistently and correctly, and appropriately certified for use.
