BIG SKY – The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting of three backpacking horses at their winter ranging pasture in Madison Valley.

All three horses survived the shots to the neck, which happened on different dates starting earlier this summer.

Jake posted on Facebook: “We have someone shooting our horses 10 miles west of Four Corners! Please contact the Sheriff’s Dept. if you see anything. Three this year-all through the neck-none dead yet, but almost. I appreciate any help with this.”

“A one-time act could be random, but at this point it appears to be an intentional act,” said Gallatin County Undersheriff Dan Springer.

Jake’s Horses operates its backpacking and horse riding company in Big Sky, but the horses also spend time in Madison Valley for winter range or other needs.

All three horses shot were at the Madison Valley property.

Undersheriff Springer says due to the shootings’ somewhat remote location, it’s a challenging investigation.

We will update you if we get more information.
