BUTTE – A 25-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning after pointing a gun at people and demanding keys to their vehicles in two separate cases.

According to a press release from Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester, police responded to the first call at approximately 5 a.m. when a man in the 1100 block of West Steele St. answered his door and found another man with a gun on his porch. The suspect pointed the gun at the resident and demanded keys to a vehicle.

As the Butte Police officers responded, a second caller reported the man had also pointed a gun at him and demanded his vehicle near West Elementary School.

Officers began searching for the suspect and additional law enforcement was called in response. At 6:16 a.m. the suspect was seen in the 900 block of West Platinum St. attempting to flee but was apprehended.

A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered near the scene of the arrest after the man reportedly threw the weapon as he attempted to flee.

“The officers at the scene did a great job of locating the suspect and taking him into custody,” said Lester. “Given the actions of the suspect, were are fortunate that there were no injuries.”

According to the sheriff, at the time of his arrest, the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs, possibly methamphetamine.

The man has been detained, but not identified at this time.

Lester said there is no ongoing danger to the public at this time. Investigators continue to work on the case.
