HELENA – For nearly 50 years, runners of all ages have taken to the streets around the Capital City to participate in the Governor’s Cup.
The Governor’s Cup kicks off Friday with a Kid’s Marathon and Fun Run and is followed Saturday by a marathon, marathon relay, half marathon, 10K, and 5K.
As part of the Kid’s Marathon, Helena Public Schools allows elementary students around Helena to run the cumulative equivalent of a marathon during recess over a six week period.
On Tuesday, the district announced a record setting 900 participants from six Helena elementary schools logged miles adding up to 25.2, about a mile short of a marathon.
On Friday, many of those students will walk or run the final mile during the Kid’s Marathon at 6:30 p.m. at Centennial Park.
Race registration fees and other proceeds from the event go to The Caring Foundation of Montana, known for operating the “Care Van”, a specially-outfitted vehicle that provides healthcare survives to rural areas of the state.
