HELENA – Fire managers plan to conduct two prescribed burns in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest over the weekend.
On Saturday, May 11, the Helena Ranger District will continue the Beaver-Soup prescribed burn project northeast of Helena near York. The burn will be adjacent to the prescribed burn conducted weeks ago.
The purpose of the burn is to reduce fuel loading and improve wildlife forage and habitat.
The burn could be up to an estimated 140 acres.

On Sunday, May 12, the Judith Musselshell Ranger District will conduct an aerial-ignition prescribed burn roughly 16 miles north of Two Dot. The fuels in that area consist of mixed conifer and open parks.
The purpose of the burn is to reduce the down/dead fuels while creating a more mosaic stand structure to help improve forage for wildlife and help maintain winter range for deer and elk.
The burn could be up to an estimated 500 acres.
Both projects will be staffed and monitored throughout the weekend and into next week. Smoke will be visible from both burns.
