HELENA — The Montana Red Cross “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” campaign officially kicked off Friday afternoon at Donaldson Lecture Hall at Helena College.
For two days, the Red Cross and volunteers, including Helena’s Fire Department, will be installing free smoke detectors in 75 homes around the city.
The volunteers and fireman will test each smoke alarm and initiate a fire safety plan in case of a house fire emergency.
Apartment-House fire victim, Paige Plancich, explained how this campaign is so crucial stating, “ Well, working fire alarms are definitely important; I Learned the hard way…my apartment caught fire on December 26th, 2018, and I lost everything…and when the fire report was given to us, none of the smoke detectors had gone off or anything like that…”
Red Cross Montana’s Board Chair, Tom Wozniak, told MTN, “There’s a two-minute window and without working smoke alarms, it’s unlikely that anyone would be able to get out in that two-minute window.” Wozniak continued, “It’s very important, unfortunately, home fires are the leading cause of death in this country. It’s amazing to me, that when I saw the statistic that seven people a day, die, from home fires.”
