City of Bozeman reminds pet owners: Don’t leave dogs unattended

BOZEMAN – As the weather becomes nicer, the chances of seeing a dog in downtown Bozeman are pretty high.

Often times you may see a dog without its owner, tied to a light post or something else outside of a storefront — which is actually not allowed within the city of Bozeman.

The city has an ordinance that says owners cannot leave their dog unattended at any time.

If animal control sees this, it’s something you can receive a citation for.

“We do our best to go in and find you in a restaurant or store and say ‘Please come out and attend to your animal.’ If we cannot find you, then we can impound that animal for safe keeping until you come forward,” City of Bozeman Animal Control Officer Selena Fowler said.

Fowler says the exception to this is if you are eating at a restaurant with outdoor seating and your dog is close to you on the other side of the fence.
