HELENA – Prickly Pear Land Trust took to their Facebook page stating that the melting snow has uncovered a big mess on many local trails.
With warmer weather, more and more patrons around the city have been using trails to walk their pets and exercise in preparation for summer.
Though the snow melt is a great sign of the turning seasons, the waste left behind from pets is not.
Prickly Pear Land Trust workers would like to kindly remind all users of local trailheads to keep their trails clean.
A message of simply: please pick-up after your pets.
Many assume the dirty deed of cleaning up after trail users, like trash and the unsightly pet excrement is part of the city’s job, but that’s simply untrue.
Evan Kulesa, Prickly Pear Land Trust Coordinator said, “Right, so everyone is responsible for their own pet, but the City of Helena actually has done a great service; they are the one’s who have provided the “Mutt Mitt” station and they’re the one’s who come around and pick up the trash, and so they do a great job of keeping the trail heads super clean and it’s our part as trail users to keep it as free of dog waste as we can.”
Prickly Pear Land Trustees also thanked volunteer neighborhood groups and pet owners who have been helping clean up area’s trails following the spring melt.
Keeping the trails free of pet waste is important for not only other users on the trail but pet waste can also be harmful to plants and other animals as the waste is not as biodegradable as people assume.
