HELENA – The Salvation Army Helena Corps received national recognition last week for their transitional housing work.
The organization was one of only four Salvation Army Corps across the nation to be honored with the 2019 Social Services Award for Excellence and Achievement at The Salvation Army National Conference of Social Services.
For almost 8 years families and individuals in Helena have benefited from the Life Empowerment Program.
“The programs help catch people before homelessness or help reintegrate them back into society,” explain Captain Rob Lawler. “It includes housing but it also helps keep people in their own homes if they’re in the community.”
Lawler said in addition to helping with housing, the programs offers case management and the opportunity to gain life skills and accountability.
“Without services like this people sometimes can’t reintegrate by themselves,” said Joe Wojton, Intake Coordinator for the Helena Corps, “It’s hard for them to get a leg up when they’ve made a mistake in their lives and a lot of times these aren’t problem people, they’re people with problems and they just need a helping hard to help guide them through the process initially.”
The Helena Salvation Army is also holding a Capital campaign to expand their social services wing and improve those services for their clients. The new wing will include a new pantry and training facility.
