HELENA – “Helena Spring Manufacturing Day” let some 8th through 12th grade students from Helena Public Schools spend the afternoon touring local manufacturing companies.
The tour gave young people the opportunity to explore possible trade careers in industries, like welding, electrical and lumber.
Students began their tour at Helena College’s Airport campus, followed by Marks Lumber.
Owner, Steve Marks, showed students an inside look at their machinery at his family-owned business.
Students received protective eye wear, ear plugs and a hard hat before going near blades used to strip tree trunks of bark before processing the wood.
Eighth grader, Mayson Hays when asked what he enjoyed most about the tour said, “Probably him telling us how it all works; I liked that part the most.”
Steve Marks, owner of Marks Lumber said, “I just think it’s good that we can get young folks out into the manufacturing sector and show them what it’s all about. Tell them what kind of skills manufactures are looking for. In these young people as they start down their path towards a career.”
After Marks Lumber, students were able to tour the Helena Boeing Field as well as McDantim, Inc.
