HELENA – St. Peter’s Health has begun a major renovation for its operating rooms.

The construction began about three weeks ago and will continue for the next year and a half.

According to the hospital, renovating the six operating rooms will run about nine million dollars as the initial project is funded with the help of the St. Peter’s Health Foundation.

While the new and improved O-R will incorporate some major technological upgrades like specialty lighting to keep rooms sterile. It is one of the tools to provide continuous disinfection for the operating rooms. The hospital also intends on introducing robotic surgery to Helena. As the construction continues, Surgeons will begin to transition and implement the new changes.

Dr. Shelly Harkins, Chief Medical Officer said, “We will develop six state-of-the-art, brand new, operating rooms. Including a room for our new Da Vinci Robot; we are bringing robotic surgery to Helena which is really exciting for all of us… but of course, there needs to be a dedicated room and processes for that. Our new O-R rooms will be truly spectacular–we expect to have the best operating room in the state of Montana.”

The emergency center says it will upgrade the six operating rooms in phases, allowing four fully operational O-R rooms at any given time.
