HELENA – The Helena YMCA held their annual “Campaign Kick Off Breakfast” on Wednesday morning and presented conceptual plans for a potential new facility.

Ben Tintinger, President of the Helena Regional Sports Association (HRSA), showed mock-up designs for a new multi-purpose sport complex that would completely overhaul the current YMCA facility and utilize current staff to operate it.

In the designs shown there was a full-sized pool, multiple indoor courts and a full indoor sports field for winter soccer or football.

Helena YMCA Board Chair Luke Soper said the new facility is very needed in the Helena community.

“The main drivers are the pool for the community, additional gym space and field space. Just to have a big recreational hub for kids to participate in sports and have more room for after school activities,” said Soper.

A public meeting will be held in April to provide more information about the complex but a date and location has not been chosen at this time.

For the annual campaign, which pays for their current programs, facility upkeep and staff, the YMCA would like to see $100,000 in fundraising this year.

Audrey Hofer, Montana Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball and Capital High sophomore, help make a dent in that figure with a $10,000 grant from Gatorade.

YMCA staff are also working on getting more kids in the community involved in sporting activities at the facility.

Former Montana Gatorade Player of the Year for basketball Jamie Pickens encourages others to support the Helena YMCA and their mission.

“The YMCA was a big part of my childhood and I grew up in that gym,” said Pickens. “The YMCA means so much and are great for the community. They give so many opportunities for kids that might not have that opportunity elsewhere.”

The YMCA Board is also currently searching for a new director and are hoping to have an announcement ready by the end of May.
