State agency holds food drive to benefit Helena Food Share

HELENA – The Interagency Committee for Change by Women (ICCW) are currently organizing a large food drive at the State Capitol complex and other state agencies to benefit Helena Food Share.

Amanda Villa with ICCW said with the large influx of people because of the legislature this was a great time to do some good in the community.

“We wanted to help out our community,” said Villa. “We know during this Christmas break is when people give a lot. But we also wanted to help out when maybe giving isn’t as much in our community.”

ICCW is composed of women state employees, with the goal of creating positive change for all state workers and women as a whole.

“It’s really powerful what they’re doing,” said Food Share Executive Director Bruce Day. “This group of women is doing what they can to help provide food for their neighbors and support the community when they need it.”

Day added that there continues to be a need for food to fight hunger in the community.

Since 1987 Helena Food Share has worked to prevent hunger in the community.

Currently, the organization provides emergency food for 1,500 hundred local families each month and serves nearly 1,100 elementary school students every week with the Kid Packs program.

There are a total of nine buildings that have drop off locations and the ICCW hopes to overfill each one.

Drop Off Locations: Capitol Building, Mitchell Building, Old Livestock Building, Metcalf Building, 301 S. Park Building, Department of Transportation, Beck Building, Donovan Building and the Scott Hart Building.

Items needed most: Canned soups, peanut butter, canned tuna, beans, flour, and canned meals.
