A former Vaughn Public School student visited the school to motivate the next generation Wednesday.
Nick Smerker spoke with seventh and eighth graders about what it takes to achieve their goals.
He attended Vaughn Public School for kindergarten through eighth grade and graduated from Simms High School in 2014.
Smerker told students to find their passion, which he found in the United States Army.
“Out of high school I considered it, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that commitment as I was going through college,” Smerker said. “There was still a part of me that screamed I really wanted to be a solider. I wanted to be a solider.”
Smerker even dropped by his younger sister’s classroom to read “The Cat in the Hat” to the students.
He will head back to Georgia for more training before he is assigned to his first duty station.
