The number of fatal accidents on Montana roads fell again in 2018.

The total number of fatalities on Montana roadways in 2018 was 182, down from 186 in 2017, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

The state saw decreases in fatalities on interstates and secondary roadways and increases on urban, primary, and rural roads in 2018.

MHP Sergeant Pat McLaughlin says that engineering, education, and enforcement have helped drivers stay safer.

“You know, what impacts folks the most is enforcement. We’re out on the roads stopping violators. And every time we stop a violator, everybody that goes by us is affected by that. They see the lights, they react to it, so we’re not just affecting the one person we pull over.” McLaughlin said.

The number of fatalities is the lowest the state has seen in three years.
