Stranded boys rescued from island in Yellowstone River by helicopter

Update 6:27 p.m. The two boys were runaways from New Day Ranch, a group home for troubled youth, according to Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder.

Linder also confirmed that one boy was injured.

Update 5:54 p.m. The two boys were rescued from the island. Billings firefigthers reached them in the raft, and Gary Blain from Billings Flying Services landed a helicopter on the island to haul them out.

One boy appears to be injured, according to reports from the scene, but authorities have not confirmed their condition.

BILLINGS- Rescue crews are trying to save two boys stuck on the Yellowstone River south of the water plant in South Billings Friday evening.

Billings firefighters, police and Yellowstone County sheriff’s deputies are on the scene.

Firefighters have placed a raft in the river to float to the two boys, who are both conscious and shivering. One is lying on the island bank and the other is standing. Neither appear to be wearing a coat.
