HELENA – The beginning of a new year can feel like a fresh start for your health and fitness goals.  Whether you’re hitting the gym or just starting to exercise in the living room, the Fitness Director at Capital City Health Club, Mallory McDowell, has some pointers.

Firstly, it’s important to make sure you have clearance from your doctor whenever you start a new routine, especially if you have past injuries.

Once you’ve got the go-ahead, you should begin by adding one small change at a time. Although January first has a way of making you feel invincible, trying to change too many habits all at once is not sustainable.  Once you’ve completely acclimated to one change, then another will be easier to adjust to.

Another way to stay motivated? Work out with a partner.  Having someone to hold you accountable will help ensure that you’re still heading to the gym in the months after New Year’s Day.

Lastly, consulting a personal trainer can help you learn your way around the machines at the gym or achieve specific goals you may have. However, you don’t need any fancy equipment at all to get started. Check out the video below for a few exercises you can do from home.
