HELENA – Officials say work on new Law and Justice Center at 420 Fuller Avenue is coming along and personnel could potentially start moving in by the end of January 2019.
Lewis and Clark County Undersheriff Jason Grimmis toured the facility on Tuesday December 18 and said construction is currently on schedule and on budget.
“As far as the progress things are right on schedule,” said Grimmis.
Crews are currently working to update the building to meet modern building codes as well as ensuring the building meets law enforcement’s needs.
A final walk-through date is planned around January 18th which will determine when personnel start moving in.
“Once a certification of occupancy is signed, the walk through is completed and we’re satisfied with work Sletten Construction has done we’ll start moving in,” said Grimmis. “Then we’ll have a 3 week window to move in which includes three-quarters of our operations over here.”
Grimmis said staff are excited to get into the new building and asks for the public’s patience once that transition period starts.
“Certain processes will be delayed,” said Grimmis, “We may take some time off from doing concealed weapons permits during the move in week, but we’re always going to have officers working the streets.”
Grimmis added only after everything is transferred to the new building will conversion of the old building into the prison start.
Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Office recently inducted 4 new detention officers to as part of their hiring for the jail expansion.
