GREAT FALLS – Calumet Montana Refining is currently performing maintenance activities at the refinery, which means there may be increased flaring.

The maintenance activities are expected to be completed Friday.

During this time, the flare will be visible and might even be heard.

The gas being flared is primarily hydrogen. Refinery flares are essential safety devices in refinery operations, and they are subject to strict regulatory controls, according to Calumet.

Crews are working to complete maintenance activities as quickly as possible and return the refinery to normal operations, Calumet stated in a press release.
