HELENA – The Helena City Commission is now accepting applications to fill the municipal court judgeship vacancy.

“We’re soliciting applications from people who are lawyers, members of the Montana Bar, who live in the county and who aspire to be a fair, efficient and good municipal judge,” said Helena City Manager Dennis Taylor.

Current Municipal Judge Bob Wood announced earlier this year and Taylor added Wood is a great role model for the position.

Applicants need to be a lawyer in good standing who has been admitted to practice law in the state of Montana for at least 3 years, a United States citizen, a 3 year Montana resident and 1 year Lewis and Clark County resident at a minimum.

Taylor said the city hopes to have Wood’s replacement in place before his official retirement.

“It’s a tough job and Judge Wood has been the city prosecutor before he was our municipal court judge and he’s worked there for almost a decade,” said Taylor. “You get a lot of people going through the court in a short amount of time so the person has to be efficient, fair and just.”

The deadline for applications is January 11, 2019 at 5:00 p.m .and the commission will select potential interviewees on January 30.

The appointment term for the judgeship is from March 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 and the position is subject to election in 2019.

Taylor added Judge Wood’s has run a great office and the city is happy for his well earned retirement.
