HELENA – The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office recognized its second-in-command Wednesday for his years of service.
Undersheriff Jason Grimmis marked 25 years with the department and 20 years as a sworn law enforcement officer. He started in 1993 as a detention officer, then became a full-time deputy in 1998.
“A 20-year career, hitting that 20-year milestone is a huge accomplishment, but it’s a very gratifying accomplishment, because there is so much good I feel like I’ve done – and I still have yet to do – for the community, for fellow officers, for the profession of law enforcement,” said Grimmis.
Grimmis was presented with a plaque and a metal carving of an American flag with the badge numbers he has held.
Sheriff Leo Dutton and other department leaders thanked Grimmis for the work he’s done and for his support of other officers.
“You’ve always looked out for the agency, and since becoming undersheriff, you’ve looked out for me as well,” said Dutton.
Grimmis has held a number of positions with the sheriff’s office, working as a deputy in Augusta, a field training officer, a search and rescue liaison, patrol bureau captain and detention center captain before becoming undersheriff in January 2017. As undersheriff, he has played a lead role in the department’s plans to move from the Law Enforcement Center and convert the entire building into expanded jail space.
“It’s been very challenging,” Grimmis said. “I’ve been exposed to things I never thought I’d be working on and broadened my knowledge.”
He said he’s thankful for the support he’s received from his family and from the people he works with.
“It’s truly about just being blessed on timing and opportunity, and having great role models that I’ve had before me within the sheriff’s office that have helped guide me to reach my individual accomplishments,” he said.
