Recent school bus-related fatalities have sparked concern for student safety across the country.
Motorists need to make sure that they are following all bus laws when they see a bus picking up or dropping off kids. When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm comes out, drivers are required to stop.
Snow on the roads may make it harder for drivers to stop at the site of kids around a bus stop. Bozeman Police Department Operations Sargent Travis Munter says that motorists need to use extra caution around schools.
“The motorist needs to be paying attention because kids can be unpredictable. They cannot be seen sometimes behind vehicles because some of them are shorter, so it just makes a lot of things difficult. A really important thing is for the motorist to be watching for the kids at intersections, schools, and bus stops.” Munter said.
The Bozeman Police Department also urges parents to teach their kids about safely crossing the street at crosswalks and intersections.
