BOZEMAN – The Montana Better Business Bureau is urging people to be aware of scams on Veterans Day.

The Bureau said last year more than 100,000 scams were reported by military families and military members.

BBB Marketplace Manager Hannah Stiff said calls and emails are usually scams if they attempt to put a person under excessive pressure to do something, or if they ask for personal identification information.

Stiff cautions that the scammers can play on callers emotions and even pretend to be veterans themselves.

“And so people get really wrapped up in these stories and that is how they might end up doing something they wouldn’t ordinarily do,” said Stiff. “So we really want people to do a little bit of research and take a breath before making a decision and maybe giving to someone that is a scam artist instead of a wonderful charity.”
