HELENA-Democrat incumbent Leo Dutton has won another term as Lewis and Clark Co. Sheriff.

Dutton defeated Republican Jay Nelson by a wide margin.

Dutton has worked with the Sheriff’s Office for more than 30 years. He was appointed sheriff in 2008.

Nelson is a Montana Highway Patrol Sergeant and son of the late Mickey Nelson, the long-time Lewis and Clark Co. Coroner.

Sheriff Dutton thanked voters for their continued support late Tuesday night.

He told MTN, “I would like to thank all of the voters in Lewis and Clark County for stepping up and believing in me and my team. I want to thank my wife for all the hard work she’s done and all the people standing with me that have done an awesome job. It’s been a long road but I enjoy the job, I have a great team and we enjoy working for the citizens.”

The 2018 mid-term election is the first election since county commissioners combined the sheriff’s office and the coroner’s office.
