HELENA – Thousands of canned and nonperishable food items were delivered to the Holter Museum of Art on Tuesday October 16 for CANSculpture.

The annual food drive and awareness event is put on by Helena Food Share and Opportunity Bank of Montana as a friendly competition between local businesses.

More than 3,000 cans were brought in by Opportunity Bank alone and volunteers say it will take them at least a full day of work to complete their sculpture.

Therese Davis of Opportunity Bank say it’s a great event and hopes they can help raise awareness of those who face hunger in our community.

“In our community alone we have 1 in 7 people going hungry and that could be anywhere from the elderly to children,” said Davis, “So it feels really good to help out and build awareness and get the community involved.”

This is the first time the sculptures have been at the Holter Museum of Art.

Executive director Chris Riccardo says he’s excited to bring the event to the art museum.

“These are incredible pieces of artwork that these people knock out,” said Riccardo, “We’re really excited to have them here.”

Riccardo added that he hopes the temporary exhibit bring in a lot of people with a lot of donations for Food Share.

Final judging for CANSculpture will be held on Oct. 19 at 10:00 a.m and the winner will get to choose the theme for next year.

The public will be able to see the sculptures on display at the Holter during the Fall Art walk November 2 from 5:00-9:00 p.m.
