GREAT FALLS – A group of Montanans are lending a hand in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

The Montana Red Cross reports that over the past week, five volunteers and staffers have headed to the East Coast.

The volunteers are from Missoula, Helena Great Falls and Cascade while the staffer is from Billings. More Montana folks are also expected to head out east in the near future.

They are assisting with sheltering and mass care, warehouse logistics, external relations and staff services.

The public can support Red Cross disaster relief efforts by making a monetary donation at www.redcross.org, calling 800-RED-CROSS or texting the word Florence to 90999 to make a $10 gift.

Red Cross officials note that there’s a need for blood right now as well after more than 170 blood drives have been canceled, resulting in 4,600 uncollected blood and platelet donations.

Folks can donate blood and make sure hospital shelves stay stocked by visiting www.redcross.org or calling 800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment or find a nearby blood drive.

Several Montana National Guard soldiers are also headed to the East Coast to help out in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
