MISSOULA – A man trying to save his dog from high and fast-moving water in downtown Missoula ended up needing to be rescued himself.

Unfortunately, his dog died in the currents.

Police told MTN News that a man was playing ball with his dog on the south bank of the Clark Fork River near McCormick Park when he accidentally threw the ball into the river and his dog followed.

The man then jumped in the river to rescue the dog, but got caught in rapid currents.

Search & Rescue and fire responders were able to pull the man out of the fast-moving water and he was revived with CPR.

He was brought to the hospital by EMTs and is considered to be in stable condition, though his dog did not survive.

We will update you if we get more information.
