St. Peter's Health in Helena has teamed up with the American Lung Association to offer a new program aimed at helping people quit smoking, including tobacco and e-cigarettes.

The 7-week program to residents in Helena and the surrounding areas has been ranked as the most effective program in the country for helping smokers quit.

This program uses medication and things like patches and nicotine gum, combined with therapy, to help smokers quit.

It is estimated that people who quit tobacco have tried 7-10 times before they are successful. Only around 30 percent of people who want to quit using tobacco say they visit their primary care provider to discuss options.

“By utilizing an evidence-based program, we are here to help. I have never met a former tobacco-user who regrets quitting. So, my message to the community, ‘utilize the program and let us help you,’” says Jaime Larese, the facilitator of the Freedom from Tobacco program.

Tobacco-use remains the largest, preventable cause of death and disease in the United States.
